About Kedarnath Dham Yatra

Kedarnath is a revered Hindu pilgrimage site located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, nestled in the beautiful Garhwal Himalayas. It is primarily known for the Kedarnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, and is part of the Char Dham Yatra, a sacred circuit of four pilgrimage sites in the region (the other three being Yamunotri, Gangotri, and Badrinath). Kedarnath holds immense religious and spiritual significance, attracting thousands of devotees and tourists every year.

Kedarnath Temple: The temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, which are believed to be the holiest abodes of Lord Shiva. Location: Kedarnath is situated at an altitude of about 3,580 meters (11,760 feet) above sea level. It is remote and can only be reached by foot or on horseback/mule from the nearby town of Gaurikund, which is around 16 kilometers away.

The Journey: The trek to Kedarnath from Gaurikund is challenging due to the steep terrain and unpredictable weather conditions, but the experience offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and rivers. Many pilgrims also undertake the journey to seek spiritual redemption.

Accessibility: The Kedarnath Temple is open to pilgrims from April to November, depending on weather conditions. The temple is closed during the harsh winter months due to heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures.

Day (1) :

Haridwar – Guptkashi (210,Kms/7-8Hrs Drive)

Morning pick up from Haridwar & drive straight to Guptkashi. Enroute you can see the beautiful river Mandakini at Tilwara. The Mandakni River comes from Kedarnath, drive alongside the river to reach Guptkashi. On arrival, check in the Hotel.

Overnight stay at Hotel in Guptkashi/Phata/Sitapur

MEAL: Dinner

Sightseeing: Visit Devprayag, Dhari devi, Rudraprayag, Ardhnarishwar Temple.

Guptkashi: The name Guptkashi means “Hidden Benares. Mythology describes how when the Pandavas brothers were searching for a glimpse of Shiva, Shiv ji first concealed himself at Guptkashi, but later fled from them further up the valley to Kedarnath, where the Pandavas finally got their wish fulfilled. There are more tangible connections as well-the Kedarnath pandas (hereditary pilgrimage priests) live in Guptkashi during the winter months, and after the Kedarnath temple closes for the winter, the image of Kedarnath passes through Guptkashi on its way to Ukhimath (across the valley), where it stays for the winter.

Day (2) :

Guptkashi – Kedarnath- Guptkashi (30,Kms Drive / 20,kmS Trek)

Morning after breakfast, drive to Sonprayag for trekking of kedarnath. (You have to leave the hotel too early in the morning).

By Helicopter: Morning our driver will transfer you to your pre-book Helipad. After coming back to the helipad our car will drop you at the Hotel for rest.
By Trek: Morning our driver will drop you at Sonprayag then you have to take a local jeep for Gaurikund, then your trek will start for kedarnath ji. After darshan you follow the same back to Sonprayag. There is a big parking issue so the driver will park the vehicle at another place if his contact no. is not working then you have to arrange another taxi or wait for your driver to send the message.

Day (3) :

Kedarnath - Guptkashi (20,kms trek / 30,kms Drive)

Early morning you get up before dawn and after taking bath you are at the temple by 4:45 am for the ‘Abhishek' to Kedarnath Shiva. Everyone can go inside Garbha-Griha and touch the idol. You can also prostrate with your head touching the deity etc. After darshan and puja you come out of the temple and return to the Govt. Camps / Lodges. Later you'll start the return trek of 20 km from Kedarnath to Sonprayag. The vehicles wait for you in Sonprayag Car Parking and you'll drive to your hotel.

Kedarnath: The Kedarnath shrine, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, is a scenic spot situated, against the backdrop of the majestic Kedarnath range. Kedar is another name of Lord Shiva. According to legend, the Pandavas after having won over the Kaurava in the Kurukshetra war, felt guilty of having killed their own brothers and sought the blessings of Lord Shiva for redemption. He eluded them repeatedly and while fleeing took refuge at Kedarnath in the form of a bull. On being followed he dived into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface. The remaining portions of Lord Shiva appeared at four other places and are worshipped there as his manifestations. The arms appeared at Tungnath, the face at Rudranath, the belly at Madhmaheshwar and his locks (hair) with head at Kalpeshwar. Kedarnath Weather - Due to its high altitude the weather in Kedarnath remains cold for most part of the year. Summer here is cool and pleasant while winter is severe. During the summer season the temperature varies around 20°Celsius. Light woolen wear is recommended. Winter season in Kedarnath is severe with mercury falling to as low as 0°Celsius. During this time the place experiences snowfall as well. Due to the extreme climatic conditions, this time is usually avoided by tourist.

Day (4) :

Guptkashi - Haridwar (210,Kms /7/8 Hrs. Drive)

Morning, after breakfast, you drive downhill to Haridwar via Rishikesh, Rishikesh a spiritual city and the Yoga capital of the world. Evening drive to Haridwar, cab will drop you at Haridwar Station.
