About Do Dham Yatra

Kedarnath and Badrinath are two of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand, nestled in the heart of the Himalayas. Both are part of the Char Dham Yatra (the four sacred abodes of the Hindu gods), and they hold immense religious significance for Hindus. Here’s an overview of both these sacred destinations

Kedarnath is situated at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet), near the Mandakini River in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is approximately 216 km from Rishikesh and can be accessed through a combination of road and a trek.

Kedarnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and it is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, the most sacred shrines of Shiva.

According to Hindu mythology, the temple is believed to have been built by Pandavas (from the Mahabharata) to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings for forgiveness.

The Kedarnath Temple is an ancient structure, known for its stunning location surrounded by snow-capped peaks and lush valleys.

Kedarnath Temple: The main attraction, the temple is a marvel of ancient architecture and holds great religious importance. Pilgrims come here to offer prayers and seek blessings.

Trekking: The trek to Kedarnath from Gaurikund is about 16 km, with a steady climb through scenic landscapes. Alternatively, pony rides and palanquins are available for the physically challenged.

Bhairon Temple: Located above the Kedarnath Temple, this temple is dedicated to Bhairon Baba, who is believed to protect pilgrims on their way to Kedarnath.

Kedarnath Glacier & Surroundings: The surrounding natural beauty, with its breathtaking views of the Kedarnath Peak and the Chaukhamba range, makes it a perfect spot for nature lovers.

Badrinath is situated at an altitude of 3,133 meters (10,279 feet), along the Alaknanda River, in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand. It is about 45 km from Joshimath and can be accessed by road, making it more easily reachable than Kedarnath.

Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and it is one of the Char Dham sites, as well as one of the 108 Divya Desams (holy shrines of Lord Vishnu).

According to Hindu legends, the temple was established by the sage Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. It is believed that Lord Vishnu meditated here for many years, and the temple stands at the spot where he was meditating in the form of Badri (a berry tree) It is a major pilgrimage site for Vaishnavites.

Badrinath Temple: The main attraction is the Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is known for its unique architecture, colorful structure, and the idol of Lord Vishnu which is made of saligram stone.

Tapt Kund: A natural hot spring near the temple, where devotees take a holy dip before entering the temple. It is believed that the waters of this hot spring have medicinal properties.

Sheshnetra: A small temple dedicated to Sheshnag (the serpent deity), with a natural stone marking the eye of Sheshnag.

Mata Murti Temple: Located about 3 km from the main temple, it is dedicated to Mata Murti, the mother of Lord Badrinath, where pilgrims visit for prayers.

Neelkanth Peak: A beautiful snow-covered peak visible from the temple, offering panoramic views and a great photo opportunity.

Best Time to Visit: The temple remains open from April-May to November (before the heavy snowfall starts). The winter months are harsh, and the area is usually inaccessible due to snow.
